Design & Software Development for Instrument-Interfacing in Extreme Conditions Experimental Workstation

Research:

In our lab we perform magnetoelectric characterization of strongly correlated electron materials. In this experimental station, a superconducting magnet is used in order to apply magnetic fields up to 7 Tesla on our samples, while with a continuous flow cryostat (operating either with liquid helium or liquid nitrogen) we are able to control the temperature of our samples down to 4.5 K. To measure the magneto-dielectric properties of our samples, in the form of pressed polycrystalline pellets, we use appropriate diagnostic instruments, such as an LCR bridge or an electrometer, as well as digital current sources and nano-voltmeters.

My goal is to design a system where all the instruments can be connected together and controlled in an optimized way through a computer-driven software environment. The users have the opportunity to select the type of the experiment depending on the needs of the measurements they wish to perform. Therefore the system must be created in a modular way that it can be adapted to the changes in the peripheral diagnostic electronics as these are set up or defined by the users.

To accomplish that we use the LabView object-oriented environment to create the graphical user-interface and to achieve the remote-control of the involved diagnostic instruments, as well as the management of the PID-driven temperature controllers. The most important aspect of this development is to allow for optimized parameters of the system. To do so, we collect data and we do the necessary analysis. From this procedure and the use of intelligent controlling techniques, we can compute the optimized parameters that are sensitive for the reliable and robust system behaviour.
